My Office 2000 won't start because it's missing this file:
    ***************************

    Instmsi.exe

InstMsi is the redistributable package for installing the Windows Installer. For more information about which version of the Windows Installer was shipped with your operating system, see Released Versions of Windows Installer. Some redistributables should not be run on certain versions of the operating system. The following table describes which Instmsi is compatible on which operating system.

If this file is missing, can I download it to Win98se?

    Yes I visited MS site

It's greek to me, since I'm not a developer or a programmer.
All I know is that I canot load the Offc2000 program because of the error message-- setup not responding, cannot launch d:\instmsi.exe

Yes, downloaded it and ran it

I saved to my Downloads folder (istmsi.exe) Double clicked, said it was installed.

But still not able to use the Office2000 program. The disk twirls and twirls and it gets to the first screen that says it's starting to install but it doesn't.

Is there a way I can look at the CD ROM files? Can I right click/open and see what's on the CD ROM; is that possible?

You know, there must be an easier way to spend your weekend besides fixing MS errors.

In your other post, you said this all started with a virus. How did you find and get rid of the virus?

Go to MY Computer and open you CD Rom drive. You should be able to browse it there.

    I have the VetMon95 virus

All this started when I reformatted the hard drive. All programs installed, all devices installed, the computer is working, except Offc 2000.

Messg: setup not responding cannot launch d:\instmsi.exe, cannot find the file.

Went to the CD ROM/Open, in the folder MSI, the file is there.
    instmsi.exe
    and instmsiw.exe

Two files in the MSI folder. Maybe they're corrupt?

I don't know why you're asking about the virus -- the virus is over and one with.

Guess I misunderstood your post. From the error message you're getting it appears it can't find it on the cdrom. To see what's on the cdrom, open my computer and right click on your d: drive and choose explore. Use find in the start menu to see if it's there. Perhaps the cd is damaged?

    Yes the file is there

I was able to open the CD ROM, the files: instmsi.exe & instmsiw.exe are in the MSI folder.

I'm so disenchanted with this Microsh** that I'm ready to jump to Star Office. Life shouldn't be this hard. Nobody should have to be hostage to a company.

The path looks like it should be D:\MSI\instmsi.exe. I think it is looking in the root of D:\.

Is there a browse button so you can send it to the right place?

I was unsure if you had formatted the drive after you found the virus or before.

    I have the instmsi.exe file

But I don't know how to replace it in the Offc2000 CD ROM.

When I put the CD in the tray, it spins and spins and stops on the opening screen.

It sounds very strongly to me that you have the worm virus w32klez
because that is exacly what it does (among other things).

As it corrupts certain files, and it seems to have a liking to certain program types, your computer willr espond "can not locate program" "can not locate file ", etc. You go to the applicable folder and you see the file right there! But the computer can't see it, because the file has been changed/corrupted slightly, so in effect it is not really the same file, though the name and icon are the same.

http://www.infinisource.com/#virus has info on viruses and fixes.

Interesting, it only affects MS products

Systems Not Affected: Macintosh, Unix, Linux

To prevent this in the future, should I do as it states: disconnect the computer from the DSL at night? Normally I just shut it down.

    Problem Solved!

From another board: Downloaded the msciu.exe (install cleaner) and ran the program. Wiped the disk clean (had smudge on the back) and voila! it works, it loads, it's working!

    Hey Sal,

Really happy that you had your problem solved.:D

Can you share with us the link where you got the msiu.exe file?

BTW are you running a firewall and virus protection now?

Yes, Bill I was running a FW & AV

The FW is tiny firewall and the AV is EZ Trust.

I now have them on the scheduled tasks to run twice a week. I also added another AV: Pcillin.
