On several occasions the last few months, updates have been installed without my conscent. Today I'm notified that "Dynabook Inc. - System - 4/15/2019 12:00:00 AM - 4.3.0.0" is awaiting a restart. I never heard about "Dynabook blahblah" and wonder what the inbreads at Microsoft are up to, installing a 1½ years old update on a system that probably doesn't need it!

If you suspect that I'm p-i-s-s-e-d off ... ... youre right!

After restarting I was urged to create a "Microsoft Account" of some kind to log in. No possibility to decline, only "go ahead" or "remind me later". I went ahead but aborted at the first opportunity.

I repeat my rhetorical question - what are the inbreads up to?

Checking the update history reveals that two driver updates have been installed, the one I was told about needing a restart and also "Dynabook Inc. - System - 1.3.6.0 but no link for more information about either.

I can confirm that it's a Toshiba Satellite and my research indicate that Dynabook and Toshiba are "related". The question is why 1½ years old driver updates are identified now and not 1½ years ago?

A driver update should not result in urging me to create an account of some kind. I have a weak memory of having been subjected to the same several weeks ago and that I at that time took the same action. Maybe that was interpreted as "remind me later"?

I knew where to find that option in Windows 7 Professional but not in Windows 10 Home. In the registry or local policies or ... ... ?

Christer, I think in W10 > Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update > View Optional Updates > make sure nothing is Ticked.

I can't find that submenu. Maybe it's because I have "KB4580980 Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8" waiting to get installed. I never install those "previews" when "the real thing" is coming in a week or two. That prevents searching for other updates and I wonder why an optional update does that?

(I'm not in the "insider program" so I don't understand why I get those "previews". I know, I know - I should give up my resistance and let them do what they want with my computer because they obviously believe it's theirs ... ... !)

Now, KB4580980 is gone (not installed) but I bet, like Arnold, it will be back tomorrow!

I still can't find that submenu.

Thanks Pete, I'll have a look.

The problem is that these most recent updates have been installed without neither notification nor conscent. Like I said in an earlier post, it's my computer, not theirs!

Yes, I know that it's their OS but when they mess it up, they mess up my computer and I don't like that!

If I knew exactly how restricted Home is, I would never have bought this specific LapTop no matter how good a deal I made.

And this morning, like Arnold, KB4580980 is back.

Well, make Bill Gates mad and sell your PC and buy a Mac. Then when it goes South, what are you going to do?

My LapTop has not gone south. It's just that Microsoft stick their nose too far into it.

I have no idea how updates are managed on a Mac! Do they need updates  ?

    Yep. Just like Windows.

Is it bad to update your Mac?
As with iOS, you may want to hold off on installing macOS updates automatically, especially because it's a good idea to fully back up your Mac before installing such an update. However, installing system files and security updates is a very good idea, because these are updates that are essential to protect your Mac.May 14, 2019

Is my Mac too old to update?
From a security standpoint, using the latest version of macOS—the Mac operating system—is always preferred. However, if your Mac is several years old, there's a good chance that the current version of macOS won't run on your Mac; Apple drops support for Mac models that it declares to be vintage or obsolete.Oct 8, 2019

Interesting to note that a lot of the considerations are the same!

Well, not really. Since it is labeled as a "preview", if I want to wait for the "real thing", why can't I make it go away? If it is essential, stop calling it "preview"!

It comes and goes on my LapTop (W10Home) but it stays put on my DeskTop (W10Pro). The behaviour seems a bit erratic to me.

    A rant about "preview":

While typing this post, I have clicked on "preview" a number of times. I made changes and clicked "preview" again. Now when I click "reply to thread" ... ... that's the real thing!
