    Hello there,

    After a very long haul
My last remaining problems seem to be related to Dcom, and Ntuser group access.

What is Dcom I would dearly like to turn it off, but I can't find what triggers it.

How can I disable "Group access " from a mob called NTUSER .
I can't seem to disable the folder " Groups" ( or the files within), only the " User " folder, which contains Guest, admin, new user etc.

I am trying to run the computer as a standalone Audio workstation

I am the only person who will use this computer it needs no LAN or any other type of network, No internet, no Com ports,I want to strip it down to rock solid bare bones and Apps.

    .

I would like to get rid of everything I don't need.

I have no idea what most things mean as I have never worked in an office or used computers for anything other than Graphics or Audio. So words such as "local server" are Japanese to me I'm afraid

What stuff can I get rid of please.

Xp Pro seems fabulous but a little bloated for what I need.

And please don't say Win 98, some of my drivers will only work with xp

    Thank you for your time.
    all answers will help

Have you turned off all of XP services you don't need? If not, go to Black Viper's site for his list of services complete with recommendations about which to disable, set to manual and leave automatic...depending on what you intend to do on that computer.

It's a little tedious but well worth the effort, especially since you want to trim XP down as far as you can.

Did your computer come with a lot of pre installed garbage (My Mom bought an HP at WalMart that was loaded with system hogging things) or did you do a clean install of XP? Is the memory or hard drive in the computer sufficient for what you want to do? A lot of "unnecessary" stuff in XP does no harm to be just left alone. You can disable a lot (for example, I turned off all the networking attributes because this is a stand alone system) but some things are more bother to be rid of, and I swear, XP Pro tries to "fix" itself periodically, reverting to default settings. (Just one of it's charming quirks!) If you have the room, just do your tweak prefs and ignore the rest. If you are on the net, use Spybot and AdAware regularly to keep out spyware (besides invading your privacy, spyware ties up resources).

If you are not sure what something is, and whether to delete it, leave it be. If you can't identify it through right clicking and properties, or the help file, try a Google search. BlackViper is also an excellent resource. HTH

Danny - you asked about what DCOM is and can you turn it off.

Microsoft "explains" what it is but not sure it will help you much. "The Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) is a protocol that enables software components to communicate directly over a network in a reliable, secure, and efficient manner. Previously called "Network OLE," DCOM is designed for use across multiple network transports, including Internet protocols such as HTTP. DCOM is based on the Open Software Foundation's DCE-RPC spec and will work with both Java applets and ActiveX® components through its use of the Component Object Model (COM). "

In general, it makes lots of the network aware/internet aware stuff (like links in documents) work. And at this point lots of apps won't work right if they can't find it - network or no network. You probably don't want to disable it.

But it would help if you explained what sort of problems it is causing you.

Let me second the suggestion you take a look at the Black Viper site for some excellent info about what you can turn off and what you shouldn't.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll have a look at the B.V site

Newt I'll find the relevent error messages ( no printer on the standalone, will have to jot by hand)and post it up.

Johanna yes it was a clean install.
