This process starts randomly and cycles on for 30 secs. then shuts off for 10secs. and repeats over and over until I open task manager and then stops. I think there may be another problem with my pagefiles. My whole computer is acting wierd since I added a new HD to my system.

Is their a place that I could go to that verify's my system settings and update or replace needed files?

    Thanks. bob

"Windows NT4/2000/XP task which is part of the Microsoft Index Server (NT4) or its replacement, the Microsoft Indexing Service (2000/XP). The Indexing Service is a background process which catalogues files so that you can then do searches for any piece of text across your entire file system, or across a specific range of folders. The Indexing Service works differently on server operating system than it works on desktop operating systems. On fileservers running Windows NT4/2000-server/XP-server, the Indexing Service, which needs to be set up, configured, and started, is used to construct library catalogues which end-users on the network can then search to find specific documents "“ in short, it is an Intranet tool. On desktop operating systems (Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home or Professional), the Indexing Service runs by default and simply catalogues in the background all files on your PC so that when you do a "Search for Files or Folders ", the results come back much faster as Windows 2000/XP gets its results from the catalogues (indexes) that were built by the Indexing Service rather than through trawling your entire disk for every search you make.

    Recommendation :
In most cases you should leave it alone on desktops; however, there are cases where CIDAEMON runs amok and consumes excessive amounts of memory and CPU and the PC slows down as a result "“ when that is the case, setting CIDAEMON as a disabled or manual start service in "Services" in the Control Panel (WinNT4) / Administrative Tools (Win2000/XP) should solve your problem. On fileservers, on the other hand, most problems are resolved with the most recent Support Packs, particularly on NT4 (SP6) and 2000 (SP3). "

    CIDEAMON.EXE and (VERY) Slow Indexing

    Hey All

Was searching the site for "slow indexing" and ran across this mini-thread for I too have noticed that my Symantic firewall occasionally asks about cideamon.exe requesting internet access. At the time, I didn't know what it was and thought it was a trojan or the likes, so *I THINK* I blocked it...

That said - ever since. whenever I receive a file (like a photo) in Outlook Express, and do a "save file" - I then select "browse" to find the appropriate folder to place it in...

Well, the tree window opens, but either #1) Stalls out completely (OE still functions, so the entire process is not hung) OR #2) It does eventually load the tree - but takes about 40 seconds on average... I think it's an indexing issue - and have toyed around with "quick indexing" to no avail... CPQ/HP support hasn't a clue!

I will add this... On CPQ's suggestion, I did a 'selective boot' - and only loaded the basics (can't recall the exact function command, but it's not safe mode) that said, the tree display did speed up a little (20 seconds now) vs. hanging all together... I have few TSR's running - but suspect a few things...

I've toggled "quick indexing" both on and off - and makes no difference... Sigh

Sorry, not much tech data to go from, but this one is puzzling many at CPQ and MS -

    Any thoughts or suggestions?
