A firewall helps prevent someone remotely connecting to your computer without your knowledge, free to do as they wish with your personal information, files, etc. XP has a built in firewall that is enabled or disabled on the advanced tab of your internet connection's properties. Other third party firewalls also monitor outgoing access and can be configured to allow or prevent various programs from accessing the net.

A firewall is a software or hardware (router) that prevents unauthorized communications between your computer and the internet. XP has a built in one-way (incoming only) firewall. , but most users should have a third party software firewall. (Do a search on the board, there are many reputable choices, some for free, some with a nominal charge).

Your firewall should NEVER be shut off unless your modem is disconnected and you are OFFLINE. Without a firewall, your system is vulnerable. A good firewall should be configurable to allow all legit activity, and shouldn't prevent you from accessing IM programs.
