It's about time someone asked this question.

What earthly good are those cookies Microsoft has invented ?

    I delete them constantly.

Never did me any harm to do without them !

And, those "termporary internet files ".
Seems the vendors are after the computer user big time and Microsoft is
    the culprit.

    So, any answers ?

Generally cookies are beneficial and not worth worrying about.

This article explains it better than I could.

As for Temporary Internet Files, you can think of them as a cache that allows you to return to a previously visited page in your current session without having to wait so long for it to load. I consider that a nice feature and worth the disk space but I never allot more than 50 megs.

Anything can be exploited but there is little damage from either of these two and the good outweighs any risk.

    fyi,
    Microsoft did not invent cookies.
Cookie comes from a programming term "magic cookie ", which existed before the WWW and the Internet. A fellow at Netscape was the first to implement the "magic cookie" principle in a Web application. Cookies are valuable if not essential tools.

A simple example of what cookies do-> They store your user and passwords for sites like this one and keep you from having to logon each and every time you visit.

    the cache

The microsoft cache is pretty lousy if you want to read a page offline. It is mostly used to speed up web downloads (ie by not downloading them) Google Desktop on the other hand has a great cache thats easily searchable and readable offline just without pictures

You found my post - thanks !

Ok, so the big boy in charge rerouted my posting.
We put it under Windows XP because that is what we use !!!!!

    Now for the answers.

Hey thanks, you just made my day !

All that garbage about cookies and temp files being the best thing since sliced bread is a bit too much for any sane person to take.

Go back, read your own reply, read those reports you refer to.

Them benefits are for the Web Page Boys, the Advesiter Boys and the
other Good Old Boys out there. Those who want "my" computer to contain "thier" data - period.

Me, I can do without - and will.

But most computer users are too dumb to see they are being taken in.

So, cookies and meg after meg of temp files are on thousands of hard drives.
And those "history files" - any questions why I don't like them.

Thanks for letting me know they are worthless - to me !

About that "downloading at a better speed" - today that is a joke !

We got DSL - Fast Access and things download so fast we can't see
    the scrolling !

But, for those who still use "Let Bobo" (free service) I guess it would speed things up. Anybody not willing to pay 55 bucks a month for good service deserves poor responces.

    I gotta shut up !
