How to create the following task in the Task Scheduler?
Whenever the antivirus software is disabled/not running, a message box will pop up.
I know how to make a message box pop up, but I don't know what event will be logged when the antivirus software is disabled/not running.

Control Panel - Security Center should alert you if the settings are correct.

Not all application write to event viewer/event viewer doesn't record everything.... You could disable the AV and then immediately go to event viewer and look in Applications and System.

Its tray icon has already been set to 'Only show notifications', which may escape my notice because it will disappear automatically after a while.

I already did so before posting a question here, but to no avail.

Then my other thought would apply.

Do you a problem with your AV stopping on a regular basis? And if so, which AV are you using?

I am using avast free. On the avast forum, some users experienced the incident that the AV stopped suddenly, but it has never happened to me so far.

Then it should be of no worry to you if you haven't had the problem. You are looking for something that hasn't happened to you but to others. There is a reason that it has happened to them. Could be a virus/spyware/malware that they have picked up causing this problem. You haven't had the problem so there is nothing really that you can do.

It may happen to me one day in the future. I want to do some settings so that I will be alerted when it really happens. It seems that I can only rely on the Security Center.

    Not in the same boat.
Hitting the lottery won't do harm but being infected with viruses will.

If you don't trust Avast free try using something else. Underneath all of MrBill's posts there is a list of the security that he uses, they do the job, and they are all free.

Since this is a big concern of yours - just make sure you keep an eye out for the notification AND mouse over your avast icon and double check that it's running.

Even if you could find some other type of monitor software you'd want to monitor that to make sure it's running also.

Avast free is working perfectly on my computer. Who can say for sure that other AVs won't stop working suddenly without prior notice? Accidents do happen.

I've used MSE (Defender) and if it doesn't Start at 'boot' it definitely shows in the Sys Tray in Orange with Red cross.
This is FREE in your OS. ;) Neil.

How will it alert you? A different tray icon? A pop-up message?

Usually shows a Ball in the systray (lower right corner of screen) which does not revolve and is a different colour than normal. Surely this is adequate notification that ALL is NOT right. Neil.

I think there is no option but to depend on the Action Center in Windows 7.
