Hi ... I am curious whatelse is there beside using adaware is there that you can use and is really good ??? , doesn't matter whether if its free or not because for me i really hate adaware ... I find if you don't know what you are doing in adaware you could lose a lot of files which in my case happen ... I heard that most just delete everything that ad aware finds and never have a problem thats not the case for me here i try that and loss so many files that it cause me to reformat .. Oh yes then after i reformated i try it adaware out again and again i having problems with missing files ... So what i am going to do this time around not install adaware and see whether if i will still have this problem but in the mean time i like to hear what others are using beside adaware .... I do have on my comp now spyblocker , sygate this one i really like and i am thinking of using spybot ..yes or no on that ???

I have been using Spybot for a while now
    and realy like it.
Keep in mind, there are some programs that will not work
if you remove there associated spyware.

    Hello Snooker,

If you are having problems with Ad-Aware, try their forums to get an answer here http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/

Chances are that they will help you get rid of whatever is infesting your system for good. Sounds like something very serious if in the process AAW is deleting files which is making you reformat. I would get this resolved asap because trying to use other cleanup software will not work. The AAW board will have you post the log from your run and analyze it.

SpyBot has a forum as well here http://www.net-integration.net/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.cgi

    Regards - Charles

    1) With either Ad-Aware or Spybot, you have the option to backup whatever files are recommended for deletion. Then if you do not like the result you can reinstall.
    2) As Picard says, many "Freeware" programs will not work if you delete the spyware that came with them. What sort of programs would not work anymore when you deleted per Ad-Aware's recommendation? Why did you feel you had to reformat?
    3) SpywareBlaster is a very good program.
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
It catches much (though not all) spyware before it can install on your PC in the first place. Ad-Aware, of course, catches the spyware only after it is installed on your PC. Same for Spybot S&D unless you activate the Immunize feature. The latter is not as powerful as SpywareBlaster (yet).

Well first let me say i have 2 comps here one with 98 and the other xp pro ... I had ad aware a few years ago on my 98 and everytime i would use it afterward i would have problems with some programs but i wouldn't notice the problems until a later time ... When i did reformated and wouldn't use or have ad aware on my comp it seem to work okay ... Its mostly my fault because i don't know which files or program that are ok to delete or whatever ... So just recendly like a month ago i tryed out again on both comps my xp seem to be okay but my 98 i am having problems again just like the others post that i been posting and which you are been helping out big time.. thanks !!! again if i could learn or understand which files are really safe to delete and which are to quarantine and back up i guess then it would be a lot easier ... Thats why i am asking what others are using

Oh yes thanks so far for all the info on here from everybody and i hope still hear more on this subject ....What others are using ???

    Snooker,

What version of Ad-Aware are you using? The current version is 6.0 build 181. If by some chance you are using an old v5.x, truely dangerous to use, infamous for causing damage, especially to the winsock file.

"again if i could learn or understand which files are really safe to delete and which are to quarantine and back up i guess then it would be a lot easier ... "

Perfect question to ask at Ad-Aware's forum. People ask all the time.

    Regards - Charles

    Snooker--
Well, most all of what Ad-Aware suggests to delete is spyware and should be deleted. (Spybot will be no different.) As mentioned, you can always backup before deletion.
If such deletion causes a "Freeware" program to no longer function, then you are going to have to decide if you want the "Freeware" and pay for it by allowing the spyware, or if you are willing to delete the spyware (and then the no-longer-functioning "Freeware ").
You have not told us what programs no longer work when you delete spyware, so we cannot advise more specifically. Often there is a truly free program available that does not bring spyware with it. With specifics, we can make recommendations.
