Two software packages that I've tried to install both recommended that I first run msconfig, and set it for a diagnostic startup. The reason given was that this would make sure the installation of their software was "clean" and free from interference with other running programs.

I can see where this would help with the program being installed. Is there any logical reason that running msconfig in this manner would also protect already installed programs?

The reason I ask is that when I tried installing Delorme Street Atlas 2009, it did not install properly, but that same attempted install also caused Roxio Creator Classic (a burning utility) to cease working. Delorme recommended I use msconfig to get their software to work, but if doing so doesn't protect other software from the the Street Atlast installation, then msconfig has only solved part of the problem.

MSCONFIG does not protect anything, all it does is prevent applications from starting when the OS starts.
