What could cause a device disconnect- then reconnect- every now and then?

    Hi:
I'm experiencing a rather strange problem. Starting today I'm noticing how the mouse would every now and then suddenly freeze for 1 second before unfreezing. At first I wasn't sure what the problem was, but by turning on my speakers and matching the system noise it made during the freeze, which fell under the category:

    "Device Disconnect "
    "Device reconnect "

in that order, I believe it's due to the mouse disconnecting then quickly reconnecting that's causing the temporary freeze.

Does anyone know how this could happen? I doubt it's a faulty mouse, as the entire system is just a few months old (Dell).

p.s: I just installed a Windows Media patch that came automatically from XP's update channel today. Could that be the culprit?

    Thanks,

It's not entirely impossible for a Windows update to cause problems? A Keyboard update caused slowdowns and other problems with my system. Although this is the only negative Windows update I've experienced and not necessarily the cause of your problem, but what I suggest is use system restore to roll back your system to the nearest restore point windows created before you noticed the problem. You mightn't find the problem but the important thing is you fix it! Start/Help and Support etc...
