This is not available for download at the Microsoft Download site. Does anyone know why?

Because it's a program that MS uses. It's not something you need but something MS thinks they need. It scans your system files and verifies that you have a legitimate copy of XP. And yes, I think that stinks..

I don't mind them knowing I have legit software but I'm thinking ahead to the day when XP isn't supported anymore. There are some programs and updates that cannot be downloaded without this update. Hopefully I'll have all i need downloaded by then but just in case you know. Any idea where its installed on the computer so I can at least copy it and save it to disk?

    Thanks.

I don't think you can get any updates other than the Windows Installer 3.1without this.

Understand there are two different things known as Windows Genuine Advantage. The first is the one you have referenced and without it, one is severely handicapped. The second piece of this is the Windows Genuine Advantage Notification and that's the one that has gotten all the "bad press" for good reason.

The one you referenced requires an active X control being accepted and loaded in Internet Explorer and is then tied to a file in a Windows folder.

    ;)

edit: edited out the file name and exact location after reading SD2's post because I don't want to break any rules either. Will leave it as "a file in a Windows folder ".

I didn't realize it was a no no. I was just thinking ahead to the day when XP is no longer supported. I wanted to be kept up to date and able to reinstall if need be. Just to say I can, you know, bragging rights. :)

Anyhow, I'll search the world over and see what I can find.

    Thanks for the info guys.

Well duh, I won't need it anyway will I? I mean, if I download the updates and save them to disk all i would have to do is install them. I won't have to redownload them again.

Sometimes I can be so dopey. :(

Ever have a day when the brain gets a BSOD?
