I installed a WD 500GB SATA drive a month ago, cloned my C: drive onto it and I can read and write files to it with no problem but havent done much else with it yet, just using it as a backup to C: However, a problem seems to have developed. Sometimes when I boot up the PC with XP I get the "disk error" notice and the option to "CHKDisk ", if I close the checking option I just get a blank screen. If I let it check, I get numerous "File record segment unreadable" and "Deleting corrupt attrib records" after which the PC boots up as normal. Attempts to Defrag the SATA drive show the message "Waiting for disk check" and unable to run defrag.
The SATA drive appears to be operating normally most of the time btu I would like to know what is going on and whether it is likely to be a bigger problem than it appears

    W.D SATA disk

    Thanks Pete,
I ran Western Digital Lifeguard diagnostics, the extended test. My other 2 drives "passed" but the SATA drive came up as "Not available" . Despite this, the test ran but after 20 minutes stopped with the message "Test stopped with errors - Too many bad sectors detected ". It is a brand new disk. Would it be best if I ran Fdisk and format? is that likely to solve the problem?

Temporarily, maybe, but the disk is faulty and IMO should be RMA'd. I would certainly not trust it again.
