I have a strange problem here . I have a new Western Digital black edition 2.5 hard drive that needs to always be formatted once it gets plug in usb port . There nothing wrong with the drive with bad sectors . Even after I format the drive and then try it out again usb , it will say I need to format , every single time . The only way I can use the drive if I use it is internally and do a clean installment of windows . I can never use it externally usb port way . I have try 2.0 and 3.0 ports , same results . I try uninstall mass storage drive and reinstall , still the same result . It doesn't matter what I do , I can not ever get it connected usb without it asking to format . When I use in internally there nothing going wrong , loads good and works great but it just externally the problem . Any ideas why ?

I'm using a usb enclosure I can hook it up to different computers/laptops with different OS same results . The exclosure works with different Seagate / Hitachi drives , just not WD Black Editions

Can't say that I can fix this for you, just a few thoughts.
Is it SATA 1 or 3, does it have a jumper at the back.
What does it say in disk management when you connect, does it recognize the drive in disk management, and as what. I believe it should be "Basic ".

Hopefully someone else can guide you further.

I have a small fairly cheap SATA caddy which is conected via a USB 2.0 twin connector at the laptop and a single USB connector at the caddy end. I often see the message that the HDD needs to be formatted before it can be used. I have found that the connectors are the source of the problem, and by unplugging and then replugging them it usually cures the problem. The connecting cables are rather thick and stiff and a slight touch on the connector or wiring is enough to disconnect the HDD. This is very likely to happen if the USB female connectors are worn, as the connector is a very poor design, and does not work well with stiff cables.

However this may not be the answer as I see that other HDDs work well with the caddy. Could it be related to the power requirements of the WD HDD? It may be that your laptop/pc USB port is not supplying enough power to spin the HDD as fast as required.
