Push the reset button on the router. It will default it to factory. The factory password is ADMIN. You will need a paper clip or pencil to do this. It is a little button on the back of the router. Usually about 20 seconds held in will do it.

Connect to the router using a wire (cat5). You should not make changes to the wireless section in the router unless connected by wire.

    Full Instructions

First of all what is the brand and model of your router ?
Second before jumping to the gun - password combinations to enter the control panel for setup differ

    1) Do the setup via an ethernet cable not wireless
    2) Go to your manual of the router , an online manual at the manufacturer's support website

find the way to logon to your router
Some like to do via an install disc
I like to do it manually
If you are doing setup manually you will enter the control panel via a web based interface
Generally you go to internet explorer or Firefox and enter a sequence int he address box - usually starts 192.168.X.X

    for example linksys 192.168.1.1
    d-link 192.168.0l.1

The support will tell you the default password for your router
Its usually a combination of the account and password of admin, admin or admin blank or blank admin

You may have trouble logging onto your router web based interface
    Its spurious
If you are using i.e., then try firefox, clear the cache
    Reboot
Sometimes you just cannot log on and then voila
also ensure that your networking proxy is off in your browser

If you can log onto your control panel of your router then good
Good to the wireless security area
its often a sub area of wireless
this is where the security is set
Wep is the easiest - you set a passphrase and it generates a key
WPA is harder but more secure

Lastly if you cannot log onto your router after trying hard - then you will have to reset your router by holding a pin in the little hole in the back for 20 seconds or so

    Very important
If you have DSL ( as opposed to cable broadband internet) make sure that you have your account log on information
If you do not - you will have no internet at all and will have to set up from scratch
If you are able to use an install disc that you can download from the support site it may be easier
