My computer is playing games with me.

I like having all my system volume settings at max. This allows me to not worry about them, and use other things to set my volumes as I please. But somewhere, somethiong keeps resetting Wave/MP3 volume to 20%. I dont know what. I dont know when. I cant find any pattern. I thought it was Winamp or RealOne or MediaPlayer, but they all stay obediently at the system volume setting. I thought it was Counterstrike, especially since I once set the volume to max, started and stopped counterstrike, and found the volume reset to 20%. However, I cannot replicate this occurence. It happened once.

So, does anybody know of a program, perhaps part of XP or one integral to XP or some other common program, that can change your volume, wave/mp3 in particular, without telling you? And how do I stop it???

Check Device Manager for anything strange. Have you reinstalled your drivers? Check the Sound and Audio Devices in Control Panel. Is your sound card or onboard audio set as the default device? I had a similar problem a while back (Winamp was resetting the volume between tracks) but don't remember exactly what caused it. Have you installed or updated anything lately?
