Weird Problems

Whilst browsing the internet, for some reason I will start getting random 'not found' errors when I know the website I am trying to access is indeed fully operational. I recently setup one of my domains and I can access the website on every other computer except mine. It's like my connections are corrupted or something. I cannot access the microsoft website directly either through www.microsoft.com but I can access subdomains of it like update.microsoft.com. I can error pages if I try to go to www.microsoft.com. I know there were worms out awhile ago that ******* this up.

Also my CD drive has been playing up lately, in recent weeks when I try to close it, it just pops open again. Even worse after it pops open again, the light comes on; the computer is trying to read the disc even through the tray is half open.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Also check your Hosts file for any blocking - see if there is an entry for MS:

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

An unmofied hosts file should look like this:

I scan my PC with microsoft antispyware and norton antivirus weekly. My hosts file is also the same as the stuff you posted above.

I don't see anything malicious running, but I do see stuff running in the background that there isn't any point in runniing on startup.

Your problem seems to be one of conflicts, and you have a lot of programs sitting there accessing the net uselessly.

At the very least, a great deal of sludge will be gone once you winnow down whats useful to run and the rest on demand when needed.

I don't know whether this affects you or not, but a good idea to look in the event viewer to see what kind of errors are being logged by the system.

I have done everything suggested.

Awhile ago I did run winsockfx, could it be possible it messed up the connections? if so can it be restored to default.

Thankyou to everyone that has responded however, my problem of some websites displaying 404 persists.

For example, microsoft.com displays 404 for me however update.microsoft.com does not. One of my domains, www.imagize.com.au displays a 404 not found error for me. The strange thing is I can access it on every other computer. I have ran winsockfx in the past and I was wondering if I accidenty ran an obselete version that messed up my connections.
