    I'm getting the following message each time I log onto Foxnews.com

    Here's what it is ---

    Message from webpage
    IE-PNGfix: Children of positional element are unclickable:
    <DIVid=fshow_overlay>

    Would anyone know what this is and how to stop it? I'm using IE8 with Vista Home Premium and waiting for the amazing Windows 7

    Is http://www.foxnews.com/ the URL you're using? When I go there it appears to be a normal display, not showing what you cite. I first tried it with my usual browser, SeaMonkey, then tried with IE8, and both produced the same result. I'm using WinXP (HE) SP3 rather than Vista, so either that's the difference or somehow something in your connection is to blame. Do other Web sites behave OK or do they also give you weird results?

    bobbo - IE8 is the only browser that persistently doing this. It is that which has only started doing this today. Because it is the only browser doing this, it obviously is some setting in IE8 but I'm not sure what. If you have something else to offer, let'er rip.

    Do you get similar faulty results at other Web sites or is the foxnews.com site the only one giving you trouble? We need to narrow the options down to find out whether the cause of the trouble you're having is at your end or their end or someplace in between.

    No other site gives me a problem. It's only Foxnews, and this message comes up in a small window. I have one option with it - it simply allows me to OK it. Hitting the OK then all proceeds normally.

    Hi LumberGumRubber (What a wierd name ;))

    Please confirm the actual address as requested by Bobbo.

    Also could you try IE8 with no addons and let us know if the problem still exists? Thanks

    A Google search for "children of positioned elements are unclickable" got a little over 2,000 links. Apparently, it's a problem with the page combined with the browser you're using. Most of the ones I read cite IE6 as the culprit.

    I've had problems with the Fox News main page off and on for quite a while. It'll give me some strange error for several days, they change the page and happen to change whatever's messing things up and it's fine for days or weeks. I suspected it had to do with ads.

    Last week they had a TV show ad that gave IE8 fits. The show was on last Sunday night so the ad was removed and the site started working smoothly again.

    So now I'm convinced it's the ads. If I'm right, once they change whichever one is upsetting your version of IE, the problem will disappear.

    IE-PNGfix is a plugin to handle the IE PNG image transparency bugs. IE does not handle transparent PNGs properly. The plugin is part of the jQuery package used by Web developers (jQuery = javascript libraries).

    The "error" you got or still get is due to the javascript code used in the page. That others don't get the "error" indicates that something else on your comp is influencing the behavior of javascript on Web pages, usually this means antivirus pgms, security pgms, browser settings, anti-spyware, anti-adware, etc.

    The page contains this code:
    Code:
    <div id= "fshow_overlay" class= "overlay ">
    <div class= "overlayhdr "><a title= "fshow_overlay" onclick= "overlay(this.title)" href= "# "><img src= "/i/new/close.jpg" alt=" " /></a></div>
    <div class= "fshow_OverlayBox ">
    which is an "onclick" event that changes images. The text "Children of positional element are unclickable" is likely contained in the .js file (javascript).

    Click the header image on that page, the Fox News image at top left of page. Clicking it changes the images on the right side of the page (ads).

    Wildfire, thanks for the response. Lumbergumrubber is definitely a weird and wonderful name, although it's something you wouldn't want the President of your country called.

    Tried with no addon's - no fix.

    Miz - strange that you mention different adds - I've had no problems with this site as far back as I can remember.

    TonyT - clicking on the Foxnews header image at the top of the page does nothing to overcome this snag.

    Here's something else to add to the boiling pot - I tried the site with another laptop here with the same programming on it (Vista - IE8) and this message does not come up.

    So it seems to be something on this system that suddenly (and without warning) has decided to throw into an upheaval.
    Strange though - nothing has been changed on this system lately. I've done scans for viruses / spyware / malware etc and nothing is showing up whatsoever.

    If there is something else that comes up, send it this way.

    Whoa!!! This is getting scary! Hobgobblins or no, I'm keeping a Fire Extinguisher right at hand. The fact that you are now getting this same message Xcordovax, gives credence to the thought this is the Foxnews website. Strange still though, the other laptop here is not as of yet getting that same error. Stay tuned though - you might hear of a laptop that has burst into a ball of flames!!!

    As to fixing Javascript settings, I'm still searching how to do this.

    Ignore the error, the problem is caused by bugs in the javascript at the site, you have no control over it. Variances between computers likely has to do with cached and refreshed versions of the downloaded .js files referenced in the page code.

    Ok - so I guess one just waits for the writers of this javascript to put out an update, correct. Thanks for the info!

    An update of your software is not required, the problem is with foxnews and (other than complaining) there's not a lot you can do about it.

    By the way my country doesn't have a president. Right now we have a Monarch (no election) a Prime Minister (at the moment again No Election) and for the Scottish parliment a First Minister (at least he was elected). Democracy eh, what fun :D

    Good. I sent a note off to Foxnews yesterday, so I'm sure they'll really perk up and listen. One might as well try and contact ancient Egypt.

    Thanks for the information. Appreciated. And watch out for that there First Minister. :-'

    The problem with Fox has been resolved by their website, at least on my computer. Thanks for all your help.

    Me, too. But I think it's more to do with the content than the code. :p

    Indeed - I've had the problem resolved as of this past Monday. Amazing what *we* can do, hey?
