Standard 101 keyboard works fine on my system running XP Pro.
Upgraded my daughters system to XP Pro and her Keyboard failed.
Connected my known good keyboard with same result.
    Device manager reports everything OK
Updating driver reports best driver already installed.
Boot to setup and keyboard responds OK for about 10 seconds and then very very very slowly.
Removed CMOS Battery and replaced with no change.
Loaded setup defaults but no change
Booted to safe mode, deleted keyboard in device manager and re-booted with no change.
Swapped out the XP HD with a HD running Win 98se, loaded setup defaults, and got it to work.
Replaced with XP HD and same problem rears its ugly head, but this time the keyboard works but with a very long delay. Type a four letter word and after 20 seconds the first letter appears, another 20 seconds and the next and so on.
Has anyone out there experienced this problem and, if so, what was the cure you found.
Thanks in advance for you advice.
    Kelle

What was her previous system? Does she have enough processor and RAM to support XP Pro? Hardware specs would help...

    Surferdude,
Pentium 3 running at 750mhz with 384 megs RAM
Once XP loads, RAM usage = about 36%
Replaced 20 gig HD running Win 98se with new 40 gig HD for XP upgrade.

I re-installed the 20 gig, booted to SETUP but the keyboard response was very slow, took about 30 minutes to simply load CMOS defaults.
Saved and booted to Win 98. The keyboard worked OK after that.

I then re-installed the 40 gig with XP.
The keyboard works but only with huge delays.
For instance, strike the Num lock or Caps Lock key and wait for 20 or 30 seconds before the associated keyboard led illuminates.

The boot sequence detects the keyboard and mouse before looking for an operating system so I have always assumed their operation was a function of the Motherboard Cmos and if that is the case, the O.S. should have no effect.
Also, the keyboard misbehaves during SETUP before the O.S has loaded.
Please correct me if I am wrong here.

Please advise and thank you for your response to my problem
    Kelle

Those are marginally low specs to run XP but it should be doing better than you report.

Check your Device Manager for any indications of problems (yellow exclamations).

The system could be hung in compatibility mode due to some incompatible driver being loaded. Check/update any drivers for what the system is supporting. Disconnect any questionable peripherals and disable any unnecessary startups.

Have you verified that all hardware passes the MS acceptance for XP?

I had a very similar problem when changing an old Win3.2 system to Win95 so I know exactly what you are saying about typing and having it show up seconds later.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific but it's going to take some probing on your part to get to the root of this.

EDIT: Don't rule out an incompatible CD-ROM drive since I had that occur once. Unplug it to test.

I removed the Sound Blaster card and Modem and the problem disappeared.
Reinstalled the Modem and the problem reappeared.
    Giving up for today
