I recently had to change a whole lot of stuff on my system to make it compatible with a new inernet service. I lost track of every little change I tried (some kept, some rejected and returned the way they were), which I admit was really stupid of me.

System now working again, except for one little bug: at every bootup, after the desktop and all of the icons are in place, but before various other things become available in the system tray, up pops a small window. The titlebar reads: "SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/PPoEService/Run ", and the body text in the window reads "Cannot open Registry key ". There's an OK button and nothing else.

Well, I can click OK (or hit Return as long as the window is in focus) and the window disappears and bootup proceeds normally. But it's a minor annoyance and I'd like to get rid of it. Also means bootup can't proceed without my sitting there ready at the keyboard - I can't just switch on, go and get a coffee, and return to find everything ready and waiting for me.

I've looked up the registry key from the titlebar in regedit, and tried to set all the access permissions to "on ", but that didn't help.

    Running XP Home Edition SP3.

    Any advice gratefully received.

    Hi G

Apparently your other internet connection used PPoE and the new one does not.

It is still trying to run PPoE but fails until you cancel it.

Not sure where it will show up but look carefully at the protocols in Local Area connection. Uncheck first if found and reboot. If problem solved go back and uninstall.

If not found then do the below.

    D/L AutoRuns http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

Look carefully (a lot of data) thu the entries for an error or not found relating to PPoE.

When found just uncheck it (this does not delete it, only stops it from starting).

Then reboot and if all is well go back and delete the entry.

Hi Mike and tvm for rapid reply. Thanks especially for pointing me to AutoRuns - that's an awesome app and I'm going to dedicate a day or so to it in the near future to clean out a lot of junk which is slowing me down. This is pure serendipity: you've solved a small problem for me and provided a much more substantial help along the way. :)

As for the PPoE question, yes! I found only one entry with the string "PPoE" in it, unchecked it and rebooted - that did the trick. If my internet connection continues to hold up well, I'll go back in and delete it entirely.

The top of the morning to you!
