Resolved website attacked by bots and spammers

    An acquaintance of mine has a website that had open admission.

    But it has recently been attacked by bots and human spammers, the admin had to change the membership application process making it harder to join. This hurts membership.

    Is there a way to set up the website to protect it and keep relatively easy member application?

    can the website be protected by proxy?

    A proxy would also need proof that it wasn't communicating with a bot.
