Have a windows 2000 Pc, Service Pack 4. IE6 SP1. Part of a mixed network (xp and 2k)

If I type in a url nothing appears! There is no error, no message just the blue 'loading bar' in the bottom right hand corner of the browser moving very very very slowly. In the bottom left hand browser corner the message 'web site found, waiting for reply...but nothing ever does.

I can ping all pcs on the network, i can traceroute to the router, server and even websites (google and the bbc) I can ping google and the bbc wesites too using their names or ip addresses.

If I enter an ip address in the address bar of IE same results as before...slow blue bar...nothing displayed.

I suspected DNS, but if I can ping and trace using names I don't think this can be the case.

I tried using a different ip address (the machine uses static ip) made no difference.

I reinstalled IE (haven't completely removed it yet) but installed 'over the top if you will....still no difference.

    Any ideas??

I'm thinking of trying Firefox or completely removing IE and reinstall from CD.

    Any help/suggestions much appreciated

    Thanks

Using a 2nd browser is a good 1st step to determine if it's just IE giving you problems, or if there's more...

If Firefox works OK for you try running IEFix on the system. What it does and how to use it on the page. W2k compatible.

Thanks for those tips. I was passing the site the other day so installed Forefox and it worked a treat. I forgot about the IEFix but the users were quite happy so I left them with FF :D

They'll still need IE for updates.
