Could anyone please explain what "web bugs" are?

Because they are hidden do you think they collect too much info?

If not why do you think web sites find it neccessary to hide them?

Just a quick update on some info I received from a webmaster.
While surfing the net yesterday I came across a favourite
web site of mine and my software to detect the presence of web bugs sounded it's alarm. So I e-mailed the site requesting more info. The response I received was very prompt and to the point.
It clearly stated that they infact "do NOT use web bugs ".

After further investigation on my part it appears all software
used to detect eb bugs will give a false positive on a very
safe and often used HTML coding practice called an anchor.

Anyone using this type of software should keep this in mind
before jumping to conclusions as I did yesterday.

    Just my own 2 cents.

    PCWorld Link Very Informative

I have found PCWorld to be a very good magazine to look up problems and tips. I just did a search for 'web bugs' in it and came up with THESE links on some good info on it. Maybe you can find more answers to your question here.

    Good luck.

    :)

Thanks all for the information on the web bugs. I had somehow missed seeing any mention of them up until now. Bah Humbug. I hate privacy invasions like this one.
