Hi everyone. So I want to upgrade from Win7 Premium 32 bit to Win Ultimate 64 bit. I am a faculty member at a large Mid-Western university and we get great deals on software, so I did buy it, and Win7 is currently licensed to me.

I know I have to back up everything on the HD before I upgrade.
    Questions:
Can I do a "system image" and save it on my passport portable, then use that to restore the files under the new 64 bit OS?
Or do I just have to save everything to the Passport HD portable before I upgrade? Is there a best way? I am currently listed as having 217 GB used on a 1TB HD.
I have included a jpg of system resources from Speccy.

There are more qualified folks here to answer this than me, but I don't see how one could restore a system image taken from a 32 bit OS and restore it to a 64 bit one. I'm sure some of the programs would have to be reinstalled.

My answer would be to use Windows Easy Transfer already built-in to Windows 7, but wait and see what the others have to say about it first.

    Thanks Everyone!

OK thanks to all who posted. I think I got it.
I DID check my bios and it is upgraded to be able to work with the new processor and presumably the 64 bit system, so I am OK there.

Looks like the process will go something like this:

    1) Backup all files, pictures, and documents that I want to save to the Passport portable HD
    2) Recheck to make sure I have them all backed up! (I have Carbonite too)
    3) Install Windows 64 bit
    4) Re-install programs like Word, Quicken, Photoshop etc; put all files back!

    Bada bing!
    Sounds right?

Hi chinaclipper. Yes you are correct with your process. You just need to make sure to install all the drivers for your hardware by visiting the manufacturers website after you install Windows 7 64-bit.

Then click Start< All Programs< Windows Update and install all high priority updates that are available including Service Pack 1 and IE11.

I take it you didn't try to restore the 32bit image to the new 64bit OS?
