I have a Sony Laptop F540, with Win 98 SE, Pentium III 500MHz and 6GB HD.
This is my back-up for a Pavillion ze4430us that has a dead HD. So I want to upgrade this also - since it has started getting "bad sectors" on a recent scan/repair. Sony info seems hard to come by. Nothing in the User Guide at all - and not much to be found elsewhere. Maybe it's too old - but can someone steer me through an upgrade - with a larger HD (12-20GB)?

    Thanks,
    Charlie

    Hi Charlie,

Since nobody has answered this yet, I'll try. Here's one source I found in Google (you'll have to scroll down); you can do a search yourself too.

Before it dies - can I copy the formating info from existing HD to the new HD, somehow? How about saving the software and all the downloaded programs and files? Seems I saw this was possible.

I find NOTHING on the steps to locate and remove my HD. I need "how to" info, more than where to find a new HD.

Charlie - That might not be all bad. Replacing a laptop Hdd is not a difficult job, but you would be well advised to send this out to a laptop specialist. I could tell you some horror stories but I'll spare you the anxiety. Image your drive to removable media before you do anything else and you will be able to restore everything on your computer in its exact same state. This too can be done by a qualified specialist.

As a further caution, don't hand this over to just any repair shop.

    ;)

    Well said Matt!

Another comment: When one purchases a computer, one should get advice from a knowledgeable person beforehand re: what should come with the computer, as manuals, disks, etc. to try to avoid this type of problem.

Insulted? Matt, I'd never be insulted. You are one of the best this board has to offer. I just have problems with that invisible font and Sparra isn't sharing that link to invisi-reader.exe
