My wife is Japanese. We just bought a Sony Vaio laptop for her here in California. But she wants a Japanese-language operating system. Is there any way to convert the English version of Vista to Japanese? I thought there was, but have not been able to figure out how.

All the info you need can be found HERE but a multi-user interface is only available to Vista Ultimate or Enterprise users, and I am not sure but I don't think that Japanese is available.

The laptop comes only with Windows Vista Home Premium. So I apparently have to upgrade to Ultimate (for $159) to get the Japanese language version. That's pricey when the whole laptop only cost $700. But it looks like the only choice.

    Thanks for the information.

Yes, that seems your only option. At least you can get other languages these days.

My wife has her computer now and we are finding that it is better to leave everything in English. She doesn't know computers at all, so it doesn't help for the information to come up in Japanese. I can read Japanese, but much prefer English. Since I'll be doing the heavy lifting on her computer, I'll leave it in English.

It is nice that Microsoft makes other languages available. But a $159 fee to switch languages means for most people that other languages are impractical.
