Alright, my parents own a pretty big house. I'm on the third floor of it. Europeans would refer to it as the 2nd floor as the 1st floor is often referred to as the ground floor. I can barely hold a signal on the third floor, and my mother, who I gave a Thinkpad and Netgear wireless-g card to for Christmas last year, cannot even get access to the Internet, and she is on the 2nd floor. The router is located on the 1st (ground) floor. It's a "FritzBox" modem/router combo.

I usually buy Linksys equipment, as the brand has never failed me. What do I need to get and where do I place it? Would a regular G router do? Or just buy an Access Point? I've never installed a configuration like this. I also need for UPnP to continue to work.

    Thanks for any advice. :)

You need to get an access point that has the capability of acting as a repeater.

You can achieve the same by using a access point/router combo, but you already have the router built into the fritzbox. If use a combo instead of just an ap, then you'd have to disable the dhcp (router functionalities) in the combo. It more complex this way and can often be troublesome to setup. Best to just get a plain ap. And if possible, use a wire to connect the ap to the fritzbox, from the basement to the next floor up. You can also use several aps as needed.

Hey TonyT, thanks for the info. My parents definitely don't want cables, so I guess an AP will do. I figure, put the AP on the 2nd floor, as the router is on the 1st floor but towards the other end of the house. That would do it. It would cover both ends of the house and all three floors. So you would also go with Linksys? Routing capabilities are not needed, although if I had brought my own Linksys router with me, I'd be set, but it's back home in the States.

This should be a fun project. UPnP will continue working I take it?

    Thx again! :)

UPnP will still work as it is set & controlled by the router.
I would not necessisarily go w/ a linksys, just that you had mentioned the brand & I grabbed the linksys link quickly. For the money it's a good product though & should do the trick.

I'm very much open to suggestions. Should I get a FritzBox AP to keep the brand the same? Or a D-Link? Netgear?
