I used to get a tab to open after a Google search when I click on any url. Now for some reason I get a new window. I want to go back to have a new tab open. I have included a pic of my system below.

Are you using the Google toolbar? .....

Click on the down arrow to the right of the spanner icon > Options - Search Features - Open in ..... Select New Tab from the dropdown.

No I do not use Google tool bar. My home page is Google.com.
    What is the spanner icon?

The spanner icon is at the right hand end of the Google Toolbar.

Although I use Google.com as my search engine if I type google.com into the address bar it gets changed to .co.uk :(

However under Search Settings there is the option to open the search in a new window - if you see that it should be unchecked?

"Spanner" is UK-speak for "wrench." ;)

Go to Tools>Internet Options and on the General tab, click the Settings button in the Tabs section.

In the window that opens, enable whatever preferences you want, click OK and OK.

If you have a wheel mouse, you can force any link to open in a new tab by clicking on it with the wheel instead of the left-hand mouse button.

No, PeteC was just using the Google tool bar as an aid for telling where to find the wrench/spanner icon.

The tabbed browsing settings are in Internet Explorer and have nothing to do with the Google toolbar.

If you have trouble finding the icon, just press one of the Alt keys. That will display the menu bar at the top (File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, Help). Click on Tools>Internet Options and on the General tab, click on the Settings button under the Tab heading.

The wrench/spanner icon is part of the Google Toolbar, which if installed, gives the option to open searches in a new tab.

However, having read the original post again I see that it is URL's from a search window that are opening in a new window. Miz's suggestion of using the wheel button is the method I use - set your mouse wheel button to 'Middle Click' in mouse properties (Control Panel)

You can also hold down the [Ctrl] button when clicking on a link; that will also open a new tab.
