Back in the bad old days of computing, it was possible to have a file become virus infected, have your AV program clean it, and wind up with a functional file once again. So it made sense to have the AV app try a few things and ask before taking action.

I can't remember that happening recently nor can I remember seeing a situation where I'd want the resulting clean file assuming my AV managed to un-infect it. More usual is to get a series of infected emails thru the day (and especially since I leave email up and running 7x24) and have to go thru the routine of the AV program waiting on me to confirm that I want a piece of trash deleted.

Anybody got a suggestion for a good AV app that can be set to see an infected file, delete said file, and get on with life?

    Hiya Newtness!
You made me go looking...but my AVG has a setting to automatically heal. Is that what you're meaning?

Dunno Daizy. Looking for something that will just delete the things, retire to the background and monitoring, and allow the mail client to continue working.

Most of the blasted AV apps I've seen just open a screen and wait for you to pat them on the head and mutter 'good app' before things continue.

Well, I'm one of those nuts that doesn't want my computer to do anything without me telling it to.....
But for you....I'll be brave and test it out. How's that?! I'll get back to you in a few.

    (sigh)
Seems you're right. It will always pop up and in the very least...make you click on the "continue" button.

I tried Newtness. Sorry about that. :(

I was hoping to tell you that eTrust would do that, but all I see in my options are to clean infections. I sent them an email inquiring about the ability to automatically delete and will let you know what I find out.

I have AVG 7.0 Professional which creates a Virus Vault folder and sends infected files to it automatically. Every so often I have a look at them and shift+delete them.

NOD32 seems to scan, clean, and quit automatically, if you set it up.

My father used to say that the trouble with the British worker was that he thought that manual labour was a Mexican.

    Hi Newt,

Per Reboot: NOD32 can be set up to do what you ask http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm

I run it on WinME, not XP - still running NAV there, so there might be a small chance that operator non-intervention wouldn't work on XP, but I doubt it.

LOL, I would never consider this - I'm a control freak, at least when it comes to computers :)

    Regards - Charles

Thanks guys. I'm pretty much a control fan myself with a few exceptions.

Since I can't remember ever wanting to save an infected attachment or the email it arrived in, I'll make an exception in this case.

    Virus follow up

I received NETSKY.C last week the first day it hit the states. E Trust located but said not removable. Sent me a how-to remove by going to registry and removing two (2) registries. Gave codes to reinstall correctly. After much consideration I went to Roxio Go-Back and went back 36 hours. It came up clean. There isn't any trace of this now. As checked by pc-cillion, norton, e trust and adaware.
