    Hello everyone,
    This is my problem.
When I try to upgrade my W98se to XP using an Upgrade disk the following message comes up.
"Upgrade Functionality is disabled, and your copy of XP only allows upgrades "
This comes at the Collecting Information stage.
I have tried to upgrade on two machines, with the same result.
Both disks are legal and apparently undamaged (visually)
    Any advise gratefully received,
    Mike

    Thanks for the response Pete,
The CD has been loaded into my sons laptop, which has XP home installed, and came up with another message, something like unable to upgrade existing Xp system. So I assumed that the CD was alright.

Not necessarily - in your son's laptop only the first few tracks would be read before the computer recognised that XP was already loaded, but I guess may be irrelevant :)

Are you booting from the CD or trying to upgrade in Windows?

    Try another install disc.
Try upgrading to 2000 perhaps , convert to ntsf and then to xp ?
But I would make a backup first before doing this.
Call Microsoft as a last resort.
Be prepared for emails and phone calls from microsoft.com/support from Indian call centers to " resolve your issue" and pay $$$$
