Had a storm here. It knocked out the power while Win98SE was in the middle of doing a task.

When I got power back up, I had a heck of a time to get the OS to go again, but finally it seems to be working, except I just discovered I have no midi function--at least no sound. Also the for volume control for midi keeps resetting to "0. "

The chosen player, e.g., WMP9, WinAmp, shows that a midi file plays through it, but there is no sound. All other audio, including .ogg, seem to work okay.

In the multimedia properties section of the CP, there is are Audio, Video, MIDI, CD, and Devices tabs.

Opening "Devices," I find various devices, including Audio, MIDI Devices, MEDIA Control Center.

Under MIDI Devices, there is my sound card (actually listed twice--the first time alone, the second, expandable). When expanded, I see the Micrsoft GS Wavetable synth. and NVIDA DLS synth. There is no Rolan MPU401 or generic.

Clicking properties on the two devices, does not give me access to either.

Continuing down,Multimedia Properties to Midi Control Devices, expanding: I find the MIDI Sequencer Device (Media conrol). Here, I do have access to the properties of the above two, synthesizers. I can chose output, select a default.

So, it looks like the MCI Drivers are there for midi as well as CD, laser disc, and several other audio devices.

There just isn't any sound on playing a MIDI file.

I checked View|Folder Options|File Types. There are no, that is none: .mid file types nor audio/* , extensions listed.

The only name under audio is AudioCD, which upon expanding shows no extension and no mime type.

Obviously, my .mid extensions are gone, and maybe a bunch of audio/?

Can someone help me restore what might be missing?
Is there a CAB file or something? Doing a "Find," I get nothing from a search of mid, midi, *.mid, *.midi, or a search of *.mid, *.midi, mid, midi. Searching under "audio" shows me my sound cards .dll files, as well as Audio plugins--for various, not usual extensions, but there is nothing for midi.

I suppose I need to find the missing files. Put them where they belong, maybe do some registering and whatever else to get the OS's MIDI capability back.

Are there on where to start?

I'd rather add files than reload the OS or even go through sfc.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Bob

    Hi stars1234,
I suggest going into Safe Mode, right-click on any listings under MIDI Devices, and...uninstall them all.

(When you reboot into normal mode) You should have the drivers CD available for the "Rolan MPU401" (?). You may need to direct the Add New Hardware wizard to subfolders on the CD. (Watch for if the appropriate .inf file appears in the left-hand panel.)

In short, get rid of any old drivers by booting into Safe Mode and removing/uninstalling them (also remove any software in Add/Remove Programs). Boot into normal mode and find the .inf file when the Add New Hardware runs at startup
...or click Cancel in the New Hardware wizard and run the driver installation program when you get to the desktop.

You may be able to "isolate" and reinstall the MIDI system. I think you will need to reinstall the whole audio system.

    Matt
