I have partitioned, formatted and installed Win98SE on an old computer but have a problem when trying to connect to the internet or any other dial-up location.

The message I get is Error: 629 You have been disconnected from the computer you dialed. Double-click the connection to try again.

    The Win98SE version is 4.10.2222A with IE5.00.2614.3500

It appears to be a known bug when installing Win98SE but I cannot find out how to correct the problem.

There is presumably a simple answer.

Had already found this site. Followed the link to install the 128-bit DUN Security Upgrade and got redirected. Did a search for the upgrade and found a download file called "Dun14-se.exe" which was for Dial-up networking 1.4 upgrade.

Downloaded and applied update but this did not improve the situation.

This could be caused if TCP/IP->Dialup Adapter is not installed in the control panel.

To check if it is installed follow these directions:

Click on Start and select Settings

    Click on control panel

    Double click on Network

There should be a TCP/IP installed for a dial up adapter
If TCP/IP is not installed, make sure you have your Windows CD available
    Click on Add
    Select Protocol and Add
Select Microsoft under the list of manufacturers
    Select TCP/IP
    Click Ok
Keep clicking on OK until you are out of the Network Properties
You will be asked to restart the computer. Choose Yes.

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks for your efforts.

Unfortunately this all seems O.K. Have tried uninstalling and re-installing all network components to no avail.

Have tried reformatting C drive and re-installing Win98 from from scratch but error is immediately encountered. Dialing is successful but appears to fail as soon as user name and password is checked.

All was working O.K. with same hardware using Win95.

Usernames and passwords are all correct and I have tried to connect to 3 different servers. All fail with Error 629, all worked O.K with Win95.

Check the properties of your dial-up connection and see if
"require encrypted password" is checked. If so, uncheck it and try again. It also might help if you let us know who your service provider is. They may have info on their site regarding this error since your modem seems to be dialing and it's only when you enter your username and password that you get the error

The box is unchecked but the good news is that the problem has now gone away and I have no idea why.

After re-installing Win98 from scratch I used 98lite to remove IE5.0 from the machine (not for any logical reason).

I installed Netscape, still no joy.

I re-applied the Dial-up networking update, version 1.4 as mentioned earlier. Nothing.

I uninstalled Netscape and re-installed IE5.0, still nothing.

The computer was being rebooted after each action.

At the point of giving up, I checked the Network configuration once more and found that the 1.4 update had added in another couple of adapters. I deleted them.

I really had given up at this point but just tried once more to connect to the internet. It worked!

I have no idea what caused the error or how it was corrected.

Thanks for your suggestions. They were very much appreciated.

I'm glad you were able to fix the problem. I know too well, that many times I have spent days trying to figure out a problem with my computer and then all of sudden it goes away.
    Congratulations and Happy surfing!!!:D
