Have w98SE started in Safe Mode choosing / including Network Support Option. Can not access network drives (located on my XP) due to w98SE not being logged on to the network. W98 login screen never appeared during boot up. How do I prompt w98 to show network log on screen?

Is using Safe Mode your only option?

Thanks Steve for your inquiry ...

W98SE normal startup works fine, logging in user/network automatically. Never a problem on w98 or XP when looking /accessing allowed folder files. I'm experimenting with w98 ... want to create a Acronis image file of w98 (C:) drive and write/store it on my XP partitioned (D:)data drive. I would prefer w98 in safe mode / network enabled to have it starting with minimal processes.
    This possible??

It seems there is a bug with 98/98SE and Safe Mode with Network Support. I have searched for a solution but have yet to find one. It seems that somehow you would need to get the real mode drivers for your network card to load in Safe Mode.

    Thanks Whiskeyman
If I'm understanding correctly ... w98 offers Safe Mode / Network Support, but fails to provide a login screen to enable / allow the process to complete. Hmmm .., this is a definite show stopper.

    Current status
W98 screen displays it status as Safe Mode with Network.
Does this mean real mode drivers are or are NOT loaded?? When these drivers are loaded, they would offer/display the Network logon??
Does this require a special NIC??

I'm thinking an ISA NIC card that runs under DOS.

Go figure, this computer had a ISA NIC (installed by cable company a few years back when I upgraded to broadband). I removed the card and installed a PCI NIC to improve network speed. I traded the ISA card even up for the PCI NIC. Thanks very much for the advice guys. Let's say "Schools out" for this experiment.
