    hey robin

the failure to grab any updates may be a browser issue. i suggest you try some of the remedial steps outlined in this mskb article ...

between clearing cache and history, adjusting security zones, and clearing the contents of the windows update folder, these instructions may set you right.

if not, there is even info on Submitting a Windows Update Support Request

    fingers crossed

    hth

    :)

    you're welcome!

so am i to understand that it was simply a matter of clearing history, cache, the windows update folder, what?

    all of the above?

i'm really glad you are able to go grab those critical updates again.

please just give me a little more info on what you did. i am not familiar with the mcafee program you used, but it sounds like a general, all purpose window washer proggie, correct?

    :)

I am so sorry, that was very general.

Upon reading your post, I decided to do several things. Which of these things, I am not sure corrected the problem.

    1. Del all *.tmp files
    2. Del all contents of the c:\temp folder
    3. Del all contents of all temporary internet folders
    4. boot to dos prompt and del all index.dat files.
    5. Rebotted and ran mcafees quick clean
    6. Rebooted and ran quick clean again
    7. Rebooted again.

My mistake was not to check between steps so see WHICH STEP corrected the problem.

I am on so many dern computers during the day that when I come home....well lets just say.....if I can hobble along, I am happy.

I now know why Mechanics cars usually don't run....LOL

I have a feeling that the removal of the index.dat files did the trick. I have never seen this problem before and I KNEW that I had lots of updates to do!

    hey robin

well, that would have been ideal, but how often do we get ideal? not very! <g>

looks to me like you performed a thorough scrubbing, and that did the trick.

there's a poster who is having a similar prob with winxp, and when she gets back to me on the suggestions i gave her, i'll definitely pass along the success you've had with cleaning out these files.

have fun with your win updates!

    :)
