    Windows 2000 - wireless utlity

Windows XP has a wireless utility .
    Anything earlier than that ( 98/ME / 2000 ) does not
Install the wireless utilility for your wireless card.
If you do not have the disc go to the website of the maker of the card ( linksys, dlink etc etc). Note with the drivers there are often more than one version of the card - get the correct driver
The utility will be the same. They also should have windows 2000 set up instructions.

The wireless utlity in windows xp is actually a very scaled down product for the masses and not very good although commonly used and adequete.
It does not even tell your the channel of signals.
Try a program for your network of laptop called network magic.
You can also use it as a wireless manager if you wish on the laptop

Windows xp has advantages for wireless if you want to swap different wireless adapters. With xp you can install a number of different cards and go back and forth in a snap. If you swap a card in 2000 you often have to uninstall the tcip and let it reinstall on bootup.
