I looked at the archives and there doesn't seem to be much recent press in re: W2K 32bit compatibility with AMD Athelon 64 dual-core processors.
So maybe this means that it all works great and no one has any problems, or maybe it means no one is doing it, or ??
Anyway, I have W2k Pro. and am wondering what I will be able to do and/or not do with a dual-core system and this version of the OS. For ex. do I have the tools and rights to affiliate a certain process with a certain core? Can I hand-balance the loads, or in general, what control can I have over the usage of the resources? Would W2k Server give me more tools in this area? Would *any* MS OS allow more control or give more capabilities with dual-core over single CPU or are they all about the same? (I've heard that XP home does not even support dual core? True?)

(as an aside, I am not ready to move up to 64 bit given what I've read about incompatibility snafus, etc... just doesnt seem worth it.)

It would be **real neat** if somewhere there existed a chart with various OS's on one side and capabilities/features on the other, so that one could easily see what it would buy you to move from W2K Pro to XP Home, for example (or maybe that's a downward move?). Anyway, thoughts are welcomed.

Win2k Pro should work ok on dual core Athlon, but you may have to install SP5 and some software from AMD to take advantage of both the cores.

Why don't you go ahead and just install it? Then all of us would know.:)

    W2K and dual-core athelon

thanks for the reply... yes - I will be doing so this week, if everything works out. I am uncertain about what AMD SW i may need, but i can easily try to install the OS and see how it works.
Problem will be that if it works i may not know why. I assume one must have a proper toolset to see the individual core and process distribution, and I have not heard of W2K having such administrative tools. I assume such exists but hoped that someone in the community who has done this before might offer suggestions in this regard.
I will keep everyone posted on my progress.

    thx again.
