    Hi All
I've just bought a 2nd hand PC with Windows2000 Professional already installed.

Unfortunately there seems to be some OS bugs which I am unable to rectify using Norton/WinDoctor/DrWatson etc.

    I need help...

Repeated Svchost.exe problems. Error log reads:

    c0000096 <nosymbols> (0052F863)

Also find I'm getting false 'Out of Memory Ox8007000E' problems when i try to create or reply to a message in Outlook Express (this usually happens after i've been using Internet Explorer).

This is remedied by rebooting but is happening frequently enough to worry me.

In addition my PC won't disconnect from the internet unless I physically pull the plug and I constantly have problems following links on webpages and even on the desktop (eg. 'Search').

Again these are rectified by reboot but frequently reoccur.

Also I've noticed that Norton AntiVirus has referred to that WormBlast (?) virus a few times. I'm sure it says it has deleted it but is it possible that i'm experiencing problems as a result of this virus??

Can I sort these problems out without reinstalling the Operating System?

Please answer in idiot-speak if u can help.

    Thanx :)

    evee - welcome to you.

If you've just bought the PC and have the OS CD and all the software so you can reinstall it, my suggestion is a clean install. It is possible (probably) to correct all your issues but it would probably take lots more time than getting a fresh start.

If you still want to just cure the various issues, post back and we'll tackle them.

    OS Disks

Rather stupidly I bought the computer without the software disks/CDs as i trusted the guy, it was raining, and my 11 year old desperately wanted a PC to play Sims on....

After I discovered the problems, I tried asking the guy nicely for the OS only and not the applications (ie. Office, Nortons etc) but he wouldn't budge.

Ideally I'd like to sort out the Windows2000 probs but if it's beyond me I'll have to look at installing older versions or purchasing a new OS.

    Any help'd be appreciated. Thanx

    N I might even learn something ;)

    Hi

Disk Doctor says Windows is unstable (could this be due to installing SyBot S&D, etc.??) and that i need to reload files that i don't have. Also half my Norton Utilities think i'm running NT3.51 and therefore refuse to defragment etc.

Is there anything i can do other than buy a new OS???

    Ouch Ouch

With an OS CD there are quite a few things to try.

Without it, it will sorta depend on how the OS was installed.

First thing I'd try is removing all temp files, temporary internet files, cookies and then:
start~run~cmd to open a command window then
chkdsk /r and when you are told the job can't be done just now, answer Y(es) to doing it at next reboot then reboot.

The chkdsk should help some but probably won't cure your problems although it possibly could. This next one will only work with the 2K CD or if the OS was installed with the 2K cab files placed on the hard drive somewhere.

Back to the cmd prompt and
sfc /scannow which will replace any damaged or missing system files but it will need some place to gather the files from probably.

Otherwise I'd have to suggest you do a fresh OS install. These days I think the best options are XP-Pro, 98SE (but not going to be supported much longer), XP-home.

Given the problems you have now, I'd suggest a format/clean install of any OS you decide to go with.

I think everything points to a blaster worm infection.

You need to go here and run the fixblast tool.

Once this is done, update windows with the critical update from here

You will need to make sure sp3 or higher is installed

    Hope this helps
