Helping a friend upgrade from a Dell Inspiron 610 Windows 7 to Windows 10. He recently updated Microsoft updates, ran an AV scan, and ran Malwarebytes. The Windows 10 Update screen indicated that the computer was ready for the Upgrade. All went well on the download, install, and configure. The Desktop screen built normally and after the screen and icons were completely booted, got a blue screen that says Windows is restarting and a message "Kmode Exception Not Handled" with no specific as to what the problem is.

The unit then goes through a complete boot up cycle with all the circles spinning - the Windows 10 screen and the Welcome screen appear twice - and the Desktop starts to build again. Shortly after it appears to complete the boot process, the blue screen appears again and the whole process starts again. Went through this 3 times.

I was able to get to the Start button and Power on the last cycle to Shut Down via that button rather than do a hard shutdown at the wrong time.

I have tried to search for this problem but the suggestions that appeared likely all called for a bootable Windows 8 or 10 disc which I don't have. Any suggestions?

Hi Robert. You might consider trying a system refresh which will repair Windows 10 without affecting the users data, How to Refresh Windows 10.

    Evan,

Thanks for the link but I'm not sure I can pull that off. It also contains some disclaimers that alarm me a bit.
It appears that most of what my friend has installed in the 5 years or so he has had this computer may/will be wiped out. Also, the second disclaimer concerns me because it indicates if you use a certain "build ", your system may then become unusable. I don't know how to determine what the "build" is.

I'm not sure I can follow the instructions they provide in the two options. It says "Boot to advanced startup options" - I can't even get the computer to boot without restarting itself.

Indications are that a reinstall of Windows may be necessary. Don't have a Windows 10 disc and I would assume this would wipe out everything. Not sure I have the technical skills to follow all this. Any other suggestions?

You can have a look at my guide for repairing Windows 10 but its becoming more likely that you will need to perform a refresh or a reset of Windows 10 to get a working system.

    Evan,

I have gone to the "Refresh..." link you provided and am trying to work through it. One step is to insert your Windows installation or recovery media. They provide a link that directs me to to the Microsoft "Get Windows 10" to create a bootable flash drive which I am now creating. When I use the tool, would it be considered an "upgrade to windows 10 using the tool" or a "clean install ".

By the way, I was able to get the unit to boot in Safe mode so I did get it somewhat stabilized.

A refresh is considered a repair install as it reinstalls the operating system but all of the data is still in place. A reset completely removes all data and settings from the system and then reinstalls Windows.

    Evan,

Good news to report. I was describing my problem with a friend who suggested that I try uninstalling the graphics adapter and then restart the computer since I could boot into Safe mode. I did that as it appeared that would be something easy to try - and it did the trick.

Thanks for all your help and the resources you directed me to. I learned a great deal going through this process - and I now have a bootable flash drive with the Windows 10 Installation Media on it.

Bad news and then good news - sort of.

Just yesterday my friend told me the "Restart" cycle was back. I picked up his computer and brought it to my place and worked with it most of the day, with no luck. Today, I started the Refresh that you first suggested and it went through very well. Didn't have to use the Media that I created on the flash drive. Have had no restarts since the Refresh finished a couple of hours ago.

I'm now in the process of reinstalling the programs that were wiped out. Browsers, Office 2010, Adobe Reader, Roboform, Last Pass, etc. So we are back up and running and it looks very stable.

So again, thanks for all your help.
