Backup and Restore fails due to VSS Services not running. Is there a procedure to enable VSS to open. VSS appears to either be corrupt or uninstalled? Can Windows 7 be re-installed without a computer recovery procedure? Windows 7 disc is an upgrade from Vista. I have tried Tweaking.com Windows software but this software fails to correct VSS error.

Excellent article, Neil. There's much to be learned about Volume Shadow Service in regards to security.

See if this applies to you, Bobby...

Maybe it would be helpful if you could post a snip of the error message.

I tried out all the suggestions, Regedit did not show all entries.
run>VSSadmin list shaddowStorage, produces a window that flashes on/off.
    HKey_local_machine/System\Current ControlSet\Services\VSS\VSSAccessControl. add REG_DWord Type:
    MinDiffAreaFile Size 300mb.
Backup starts and runs for a few seconds, then displays check your backup -
    hangs up.

Hi BobbyScot, Try this: Go to > Control Panel > Administrative Tools . Services > and check that RPC is set to Automatic and is Started. Then set VSC to Manual and Start it.
Let's know how you get on. I tried it and it allowed a Restore Point to be established - sweet as. Neil.

For what it's worth, and due to security concerns, I have disabled Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) on my Windows 7 machine for the time being.

With VSS disabled, I made a test restore point with no problems and did a restore operation with no issues either. I'll be researching the possible implications of disabling VSS in the mean time.

EDIT: I think VSS stands for Volume Snapshot Service.

James, have a look at the link I Posted #2 where it's all explained and both VSS and VSC are terms used. Neil.

I did, but I'll reread it again.

If I can't do without VSC / VSS, I'll relegate a non-System Restore partition to download / scan sensitive files to.

I resolved the issue of failure VSS by a factory reset of the computer A long process but at least can now resume my backup/restore. In my case VSS became corrupt or disabled itself causing completee chaos. I thank all who posted suggestions. Bobby.

Bobby, after you customize your restored PC to your liking, it would be a good idea to create a system image to a second harddrive, a large enough USB device, or burned to a set of DVDs. That way, you can restore your computer to the date your image was made without having to re-customize all of your settings.

Go to: > Control Panel\System and Security\Backup and Restore. Look for Create a system image in the left column, and follow the directions.

James, thanks for information. I do a backup each week to a HD other than C drive, in this instance the restore facility became corrupt, making a restore impossible, only one thing to do was a complete restore to factory settings. Am I correct in thinking, no restore facility no restore of computer to a working condition? Bobby.

If you did an image backup, you could have restored the image - whether system restore worked or not.

My brother's PC became corrupted after virus removal, so he brought it to me along with some image backups I made some time back. After restoring the DVD images, I still had to catch up on a few security & software updates, but the job was much less involved compared to a complete factory restore / re-installation.

What could have taken me days, took only a few hours.

James, most interesting in what you say and certainly much quicker than a complete reinstall. Is it required to be on a DVD as to an HD? My Backups are carried out on a separate HD to the C drive. Bobby.

    It's your choice.

Since you have more than one harddrive installed, you can back up to it every so often (as it appears your are), but it's not a bad idea to back up to DVD from time to time also (in case your backup harddrive fails). Backing up to DVD will require multiple disks depending upon the size of your image file.

You might could even back up to an external USB stick since storage capacities have increased and prices have fallen.

Thank you for information, appreciated. I have several 64Gb flash sticks, so could use them as backups.

    You're welcome.

I hate you had to go the nuclear option, but it was probably better than doing a repair install (in my opinion). I've had little success with repair installs on past operating systems (such as XP). Maybe I'll have better luck with Windows 7, if the need arises.

What is going on? computer, appears to work ok, when a notice shows do not close or power off, again taking hours to complete.
