I'm running Windows 98 on an HP Pavillion 6465 and recently lost sound. Actually, I originally did
have sound but even though the volume control on my keyboard was set to maximum, and the slider
controls were also near maximum, the sound was so faint as to be barely heard. In the process of going through every sound/volume setting I could track down, I somehow caused the little volume
control icon on the right side of the taskbar to drop out of sight. I assume that in itself is not my problem since clicking on the icon simply took me to the volume control settings, didn't it? All of the
mute boxes are unchecked too. I also went into Windows Media and checked the volume slider there and it was also near maximum. Since I'm more at home working on my car than I am my computer, I
have to admit that I don't know what to check next. I suppose it's another case of my floundering around trying to correct something with less than a good knowledge of what I'm doing. At any rate, I would appreciate it if someone will point me in the direction of determining why I have little/ or no,
    sound despite high volume settings.
P.S. I did check the speaker cables. All in firmly.
    Thanks kindly in advance,
    Jack Barr

You may have a burnt out sound card, you may want to check it and you can change it easily on your own unless your still under warranty. It changes just like a modem would, u can get one cheap on Ebay.

    Hello Jack,
Shelga seems to think it's hardware and I tend to agree.
Any chance you can try out the speakers on another PC ?
Do the speakers have power-on lights ? Are they lit ?
Have they separate volume control ?
    regards
