Sparkle - Welcome to the Board :)

First check that in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices that there is a check mark against 'Place volume icon on the Taskbar'. If it is not does checking it restore the icon?

If not right click on the Taskbar > uncheck Lock the taskbar. Does the icon show - is there a small arrowhead at the left side of the Notification Area (by the clock). If so cicking on it will unhide/hide inactive icons. If the sound icon becomes visible righr click on the Taskbar > Propertes and uncheck 'Hde inactive icons > Apply. Then lock the Taskbar again.

    Post back with your findings.

Thanks Pete .but I've already tried all the things you've suggested me. The problem is with the antivirus. I tried 3 different ones and the only time I see the sound icon is when the antivirus is uninstalled.

    thanks anyway

Very difficult to track down the cause of problems like this - I do not recall having seen anything like this before.

There are a couple of other possible solutions here under Volume Control ....

I have edited your thread title in the hope that someone else will chip in on this.
