I'm new to this site, and new to Vista Ultimate. My Volume Control Icon has disappeared and there is no way that I can restore it. When I click on the Start icon, go to Properties, Notification Area, then to Systems Icons, the Volume Control icon is grayed out and cannot be checked off.

How can I reinstall the Volume Control icon on the taskbar?

    Thanks.

Hello rocketpilot and welcome to the Board,

change the Control Panel view to Classic.

In the CP > Sounds > Playback > then highlight Speakers > Properties General tab.

Is there an Icon for the speakers?

Under Contoller Information > Properties does the system say the device is working properly?

    Hi Charles,

Sorry for the delay in getting back. In following your instructions, the speakers are working properly. When I started my computer this morning, the volume control icon, along with the battery charging level indicator and the internet icon automatically appeared in the taskbar. I am completely baffled by the fact they would reappear for no reason. I had started my computer approximately six times since the problem happened, however, today, they reappeared.

Should I get my computer EXCORSIZED?::confused:

Again, many thanks for the reply, and if this should happen again, I will let you know. It appears there is much more to Vista than meets the eye.

    Steven

    Hi Steven,

Glad the problem is gone, for now at least, and thanks for the report back :)

Yes, but keep it on a leash.:p

The audio will have a "Control Panel ", which is a third party program that can "take control" of the audio system. It might be playing up.

You should be able to uninstall it from Control Panel (classic view)-> Programs and Features and just reinstall it from the drivers CD or maybe check for an updated version (that doesn't need a leash :D ).

    Matt
