    Hey all...

Am reinstalling a HP Pavilion model 8120...

As soon as i install windows then do the reboot it comes up with Windows protection error..

    c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd Missing/unable to load.

As this is on a freshly formatted harddrive im unsure as to wat to do/where to go from here..

I have googled around but most stuff seems to be relating slightly different that i could find. :(

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers

I'm unsure whether I should even post since I don't recall the exact fix. However, this was a known problem that was fixed by starting from a command prompt or MS-DOS mode and entering one simple command (like renaming a file or something).

I am sure I saw this fix as a Microsoft Knowledge Base KB article, though! So, it should be findable by trying a few searches at the Microsoft site.

Please do that, and one reason I posted is I remembered that it was a simple fix. I didn't want you to try all sorts of stuff that could be posted in a guru's reply which might mess up your perfectly fine new install!

Odd that file is missing or corrupt. The part you aren't going to like is that this file is created during the windows installation, and is machine specific. A Vmm32.Vxd 'borrowed' from another machine may produce unintended results. It is a compilation of several VXD files, so instead of loading 20 to 30 files only the one is, as it is meant to speed up the system bootup. A reinstall attempt is in order.

Change the boot order in the BIOS so that the CD drive is after the disk drive.

(I think just removing the CD from the drive may also work)

I have similar problem, the file WINDOWS\system\VMM32\enable.VXD "no longer exists ". I think it got deleted while a modem problem was being fixed. Is this likely to be the same problem or can the file be found somewhere?

For that matter my setup.exe file to instal my HP5550 printer won't work either.

    Any clues

How are you attempting the re-install ? From a Windows 98 CD or the Disk from HP ? ( recovery disk or what ever they call it )

    Was the HD formated ?

I had that error once when I booted from the HD to do the re-install. When I booted from the 98 Startup Disk all was fine.

I am experiencing the same problem. Although with different hardware (Compaq presario). Was there a good fix for this?

    WhitPhil has it right

I removed CD and boot is proceeding. I don't want to own up to how much pain this has cost me. How many times I have reinstalled. How much tinkering I have done to try to get around it. Thanks WhitPhil!
