Windows Vista Vista won't update

    I tried to check for windows updates but it says it cant cause its not running? I checked for the update history and its just a blank white page. What should I do? its set to auto update but I guess it hasn't been working.....

    it seem to work as i was able to do a update now but the the troubleshooter said the is a problem it couldn't fix and took me to other pages that ended up not showing me what the problem is so i guess i will just have to see what happens, should i download the 2nd service pack? though the updater says i'm up to date but the last update was back in july.

    Now the update shows 7 important updates but wont download them, i get code 80246008 windows update encountered a unknown error? there is link "get help with this problem but the page it takes me to doesn't have this code listed? I put the code in a yahoo search, i tried wise fixer but after the scan, they want $38 to fix the stuff it found, what to do?

    ok tried that and it at least let the updater show 7 important updates but when i try to download them, it says it cant and gives me a link but nothing there to help fix it?
    Here is what it says:
    Code 80246008 windows update encountered a unknown error
    There is also a link to get help with this but i read through and found nothing except run Fix It so I did but still get the same problem?

    Do this:

    • Click Start, and in the Start Search box on the start menu, type CMD, then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter (this will get you an elevation prompt for an Administrator command prompt).
    • At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv, then press Enter.
    • Next type cat /dev/null > %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log then press Enter (ignore the error that 'cat' isn't recognised... it still does what it is supposed to do).
    • Lastly type net start wuauserv, then press Enter.
    • Now repeat the action that normally leads to the Windows Update error.
    • Once completed, enter %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log in the Start Search box on the start menu and copy/paste the contents of the file in your next post.

    ok i did that and got a log to post but it wont paste here, so i opened word and tried to paste it there and it did so i tried to copy and paste from there and it does the same, it causes this site to stop responding? I've got the log but its so long i cant just type it here so what should I do now? i checked the properties on this log and its 1.11mb, is it too large?

    Yes. That's why I suggested to delete the log first (that's what cat /dev/null > %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log does).

    Make sure that after you run net start wuauserv there are only a few lines in WindowsUpdate.log. Try running Windows Update and then re-check the log.

    That's why in a prior step you should run net stop wuauserv, as I posted in post #7

    i did run that first, ive ran all the steps and this is the message i get at that point in the process, it doesn't match what you posted that should be the error message: 'cat' isn't recognised

    when i type in net stop wuauserv in cmd i get this error:
    System error 5 has occured
    Access is denied
    So i do the next step:cat /dev/null > %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log and i get: The process cannot access the file because its being used by another process.
    So i check the log and its still full at 1.9mb so it did empty?

    That is because you didn't run CMD as admin.

    Please go back and carefully read the instructions.

    Ok so i followed the instructions, i see i missd the Ctrl+Shift+Enter, and when i did net stop wuauserv it says it stoped, then i put cat /dev/null > %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log and i get The process cannot access the file because its being used by another process.I check the log and its still full

    Lets do this instead:

    • Click Start, and in the Start Search box on the start menu, type msconfig then press Enter
    • Select the Boot tab, select Safe boot, click OK & click the Restart button
    • When Vista has restarted in Safe mode, click Start, and in the Start Search box on the start menu, type CMD, right-click cmd.exe at the top of your Start menu & click Run as administrator
    • In the command prompt type echo.>%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log and press Enter
    • Click Start, and in the Start Search box on the start menu, type msconfig then press Enter
    • Select the Boot tab, un-check Safe boot, click OK & click the Restart button
    • When Vista has restarted, repeat the action that normally leads to the Windows Update error.
    • Once completed, enter %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log in the Start Search box on the start menu and copy/paste the contents of the file in your next post.
