Apologies is posted before, I tried a search but couldn't see anything relating to it.

I cannot restart Vista, It shuts down fine and starts up fine but when I try a restart I get a black screen and the power light on my Laptop is on and nothing happens.

I then have to hold the power button until the computer goes off and start up again.

I have a Sony Vaio Laptop not sure which Vista it is as it was pre installed.

Any ideas or help gratefully received.

    Many thanks

    Hello Jack

    Welcome to the BBS!

    YEP! 2 words Video Adapter!

You need to begin with the latest driver from the mfg. Not the Microsoft drivers.

More info on why this is happening?

    Is this a new computer?

Or did you just upgrade to Vista?

    Has it worked correctly before?

    When did it happen?

Sometimes Windows Update will install a Microsoft version and cause problems.

The Video adapter will have a model number like GeForce 8800 GT etc.

Go here to get the drivers.

Right the computer is about 4/5 months old

It has Windows Vista Home Premium pre installed. It has updated to Service Pack 1

It has an Nvidia Geoforce 8400GT.

I have looked at the Nvidia Website and it seems that it is a special edition for the Sony Viao VGN-AR41M.

    HTH

    Thanks

    Ahhh

    The ole SP1 update huh!

I would research at the Nvidia site to see if it mentions SP1.

If not your 1st shot probably should be updating to the latest driver if newer than your current one. That don't work next shot update (re-install) it even if it is the same driver.

You probably got a Microsoft compatible driver during the SP1 install that is not compatable!:D I crack myself up sometimes!
