    NEW issues...

    Vista Home, SP 1
    Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ 2.6Gig
    2 Gig RAM
    500 Gig HD

Things were going OK (I'm being generous) but now:

I'm limited to 2 slow downloads at a time
Google searches (from my Google bar) sometimes go on forever with no results AND no search failure

I WAS using COMODO as my firewall - I got rid of it as it was annoying me (I had other ways to describe my time with COMODO but I really do try to not to use bad words) and went back to ZoneAlarm (the newest version) but no luck.

    I'm using avast! for anti-virus.

I don't know if SP1 is the problem or not because I was having issues before the upgrade. What I DO know is I am alone at home tonight PARTLY because of this issue (see coment above about bad words... ).

Fortunately I do NOT own a sledge hammer.

Do to ALL of the issues I've been having with computers lately (and at one time I thought I knew what I was doing...) I am totally at a loss as to what I need to do now to fix this.

If there was a smilie waving a WHITE FLAG, it would be all over this post.

    Please. Help me..

    I miss my family. :(

    :)

The log is pretty much clean...but...
    1. I believe, you had Norton installed, at some point, so get Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039, and run it.
    2. IE is limited to two downloads at the same time, by default. To set it up to more downloads, look here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282402
    3. What type of connection is it?
    4. Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). See, if it's also slow in this mode.
    5. Check, if Firefox performs better.

1 - I think Norton came bundled on the computer ... I thought I got rid of it.

2 - Until SP1 installed itself, I was able to download more than 2 items at a time. I assume it got changed back with the update (but I was having other issues at the time so who knows...). Of course, I also thought I knew how to operate a computer, too. :D

    3 - dsl

4 - I will in a moment, then download the Norton Removal Tool as a test.

5 - Never used it. Yet. Perhaps it is time.........

Well.... THIS isn't working. I've lost the ability to print on my printer that is connected to a different computer on my home network. Web pages did load slightly faster, though. At first...

I'm going to re-boot to see if printing returns. Meanwhile... which option do I use with NRT? I'm going to guess 2007....

    Printing came back.

FYI - Transfer rate for downloading NRT ended up around 50 or so...

OK - ran NRT. Will reboot to see if there is any improvement.

Oh, and ignor the download speed posted above. My laptop has ESPN360 running, so obviously it's taking 1/2 of my available download speed.

And no, that's not the issue I'm having.

The download speed wasn't (isn't) the issue at THIS moment. When I downloaded NRT I thought the speed was real slow until, as I was rebooting again, I realized that I was also watching a live video feed on ESPN360 on my laptop, which therefore cut my available download speed in half.

Now... after a just a few minutes and a quickie test, it seems that my download speed is back up to a reasonable level. I'll test more during the next day or two and report back.

It appears that running NRT has fixed my main issue(s). Web pages are loading much faster now and searches on my Google box are working again.

I am still not sure why I can no longer download more than 2 things at a time. I tried to follow the instructions on your link but it didn't include Vista directions... but it's also just past 2AM here on the east coast so I'm calling it a night.

Tomorrow I'll give things a real workout to see if my download speed stays up where it's suppossed to be and if my searches continue to work as well. Then maybe I'll try and tackle multiple downloads. (It's only for convienence... occasionally I have multi-part downloads that I'd prefer to get all the pieces started and move on to something else I need to do, instead of "babysitting" the computer, waiting for 1 part to finish before starting another part to download...)

    But for now...

    THANK YOU for your help.

I just checked registry in my Vista, and I have both values set to 10. I don't remember, though, if I tweaked them, or they're set like this in Vista's IE.

    I'm back...

Everything was working just fine, but now I'm right back to the "original" problem of NOT being able to get a web page to come up. I thought it was "just" doing a "Google" search off my IE "box" (upper right "search" box) but that was just what I happened to be trying to do when everything stopped working.

I re-booted this stupid computer in Safe Mode, just in case I needed to be there for whatever I should be looking for / doing / ??? to try and fix the problem (but I don't believe I needed to to get back on-line).

    If this helps:

1 - I tried to just "Shut Down" the computer - nothing.
2 - I then tried "Ctrl-Alt-Del" to start the "Task Manager" - and still nothing (just went back to my Desktop)
3 - So I had to just manually turn off the computer

Computer had been on for +/- 6 hours. I hadn't really done much (email, some searching, haven't done any downloading today...). I was running Spy-Bot (1.6.0) at the time (just in case it happeded to find anything - found nothing).

I'm heading off to run a couple of errands (which is why I had started Spy-Bot in the 1st place, to run while I was out... but then I happened to think of "1 more thing" to check out before I left...).

So... where do I go from here?

Wow... That was, like, painless! And quick.

I'd always thought it would take a long time to download it, then set it up, then try and retrieve my settings and bookmarks and ...

It took me 6 minutes because I read most of the web pages before I hit download, and then went to the kitchen to get a snack.

I'll give this a real workout and let you know if I break anything. ;)

    Ok... 1st "problem ":

    RealPlayer

I'd been using it to "download" multi-part videos off of various web-sites I subscribe to (no... it's not bit torrent type stuff).

I went to try and test a download but the "Download" button didn't come up like on IE. So, I went and re-downloaded the latest version. Still wouldn't come up. Then I thought that maybe I should reboot...

    2nd problem:

It didn't reboot. It just hung there, like IE did after multiple hours of the computer being on. Except this was 30 minutes since last reboot.

(FYI - "reboot" to me = "Shut Down ", then turn computer back on)

I finally did a "Ctrl-Alt-Del" to get to the Task Manager. TM did not come up, however the computer did finally start to shut down. It did take a while to complete.

I turned on the computer, then tried again to see if I could download off the web site... still won't.

    SO ...

1 - does this give any hints?
2 - does Firefox & RealPlayer NOT play well together? (I started using RealPlayer ONLY because I could download for later viewing)
3 - Is there a different player that WOULD let me record video / audio from the web that works with Firefox???
