    OK - brief synopsis.

Wifes boss got 2 new PC's from Dell (first mistake i know)
They asked for XP but got Vista.

Dell are refusing to take back - change - fix or even talk now.

I have been trying to uninstall Vista and put XP onto the system. Tried all sorts of things.

I have put both HDD's into 1 pc and done a full format (also deleted partitions with Fdisk first)

    Have cleared the CMOS

Put HDD back into pc - insert a DEll xp disk in and get to the starting windows part and just get a blue screen error - stating that ''windows has detected a potential problem''

It never goes past that - The hardware is ok as it will still Accept the Vista setup if i put that disc in!

    Any suggestions ?

That doesn't sound right to me. I wouldn't accept it, and demand they take it back!

doesnt sound right to me. But thats the position.

personally i feel that the PC's were not supplied as specified and not fit for purpose.

Dell however are saying, "Got the money.. K thnx bai ".

No wonder the are being called Hell in many sectors instead of Dell.

    Tried that Too :(

just tried Changing Flash BIOS to the XP version - Still no joy .

All i can think of now, Is that I will need a copy of XP for that specific Dell PC ? Or is that unlikely?

Dell UK.. lovely, but I would still not/never/ever accept it. I'd look into disputing my credit card charge.

But since you've opened the case, you could have already voided the warranty (if the case is closed with a warranty sticker you've now cut, I'm not sure).

I did a quick Search at the Dell site and came up with several pages of users having problems very much like yours, dating from 6/06 to today: Windows Vista Uninstall.

However, I agree with Arie, I would jump up and down and scream at Dell and demand that the PC be replaced.

Dell offers a 30 day unconditional return policy. Meaning you can return your purchase within 30 days of purchase for any reason. Was your original call to Dell within that first 30 days? If so, I would recommend calling into customer service and request to speak with a manager regarding this manner. You should have proof that your original order stated Windows XP, but you received Windows Vista. At a minimum Dell should provide you with the XP media to reinstall your system.

I work in IT and have just run into this... you wouldn't happen to have a Dimension E520? I ran into a similar situation & found out that in the BIOS I needed to go and switch it from RAID to RAID AUTODETECT / ATA (even though the BIOS tells you not to, even if only 1 drive). This got me past the 0b blue screen during hardware detection by the XP disk.
