I had reinstall a fresh copy of Vista due to a problem installing Windows 7, and when I plugged in my HP 1012 printer it did not load correctly. Now when I try to add a printer it installs the driver, but I still cannot print.

I saw at another forum where someone having the same issue was asked to try stopping SL UI Notification and software licensing, then restart these services and reboot the computer. I tried this and still have the same issue.

    Any ideas?

Hi Javier. Click Start< Run and type services.msc and hit enter. When the service window opens scroll down and ensure that the print spooler service is started and has a startup type of Automatic.

Yes, print spooler is started and set to automatic. The problem is that even when I deleted the drivers via the registry, when I connected the printer back in a different USB port the computer does not ask to install drivers or that it found new hardware.

In Problem Reports and Solutions it reports this about the printer.
Windows detected a new device attached to your computer, but could not find the driver software it needs to make the device usable. Each device manufacturer typically includes driver software of a CD that comes with the device, or as a download from its website. The hardware ID of your device is DOT4PRT\VID_03F0&PID_0D17&REV_0100.

Try downloading and installing the printer driver from here. See if that driver can get the printer to run.

Thanks Evan, but that was the same driver I had tried to install and it still won't print.

This is really weird because before I tried to install Windows 7 and was running the OEM installed version of Vista, I had purchased this printer from a garage sale brought it howm plugged it in and it installed the software automatically. It was printing just fine, until I had to re-install Vista.

I am not sure if I was running SP2 or not though, maybe SP2 broke something in my print spooler?

Do you get an error message when you try to print something? Did you update Vista to SP2 or not?

I honestly don't know what else to suggest. :( Hopefully some other members will see this thread and help you out with one of their solutions because I'm all out of ideas as to what could be the problem.

    Problem finally fixed!!!

    Problem fixed!!!

I had noticed before that in Device manager I had a group called "Other Devices ". In this group was general IEEE1284.4 device. I had not noticed that this was for printing. When I uninstalled this device then unplugged and reconnected the printer, it finally installed automatically and recognized it as the correct printer.:)
