I have a friend who has a laptop with Vista OS. For a long time he had standby working when the lid closed and required a password to come out of standby. But now the computer goes into standby okay, but it stopped prompting for a pasword. Does anybody know why this happened, and how we can get the password part working again? I think he has a Dell, while I have an HP with XP and have had no problems with standby and password.

If you go to Contol Panel -> Power Options, on the left you will see "Require password on wakeup ".

Dell might have power management software that might override or "oversee" those Windows settings, so look for a Dell power manager program and check the settings there.

The settings might have changed because a program related to it was installed or an update has set it back to default (no password).

    Mattman,
Thanks for the tips. I won't be able to check them out for a few days yet, but I'll post the results after then.

    Mattman,
Sorry it took this long, but I lost track of time waiting for my friend to try your tip. He did try your suggestion and said the standby is requiring password again. Thanks a bunch.
