In the Start Menu at the bottom where it says "Start Search" when I type in a word (that is not a program) I get a box saying "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel "

This is since Vista SP1 install, I am sure before that if I typed in any word and it was not a program it would search inside folders/document for the occurance of that word.

But if I type in excel it launches Microsoft Excel.

Have I lost the plot and it is working correctly?

The box is a new "run" type of box.

If you want to search for a file click on SEARCH on the right side of the menu.

Yes you are correct I was completly, using it incorrectly and pressing enter after entering a search word did not help.

When you install Vista SP1 you will find that Microsoft have removed it from the rigfht hand side and also from explorer context menu, this is so 3rd party supplies can now supply/alter your search requirements (as I have been lead to believe), but apprently there are registry fixes to reinstate it, not tried this yet as they all seem to show reg keys that do not exist!

I also have a Logitech MX 3200 Laser keyboard that had a button so I could search Files/Folders this also no longer works (posted to logitech for a solution), there maybe an executable file to launch the search function but I have had no luck in finding where it resides or what it is called.
