Twice in the last few days I have tried to download and install SP1 from 'Windows Update'.
The ref no. is KB936330 and the fail error code is 80070005. Now the update has disappeared from my list of available updates. What should I do?

If Evans solutions don't work, post back & let us know if this is a laptop or desktop computer.

    Vista SP1...did it work?

    Hi Evan

Did what you suggested, downloaded the SP1 patch and installed it as Administrator.
The download took a good few mins and then I installed it but there were basically NO messages to say it had installed.
Is that right? Should I check anything to verify the installation?

    Cheers Ian

Well did you restart your computer after the installation finished? To verify if you have SP1 installed Click Start< Right Click on Computer and click Properties. The System Properties window will open. It will say the version of Vista you have installed and the Service Pack if its listed. If it says Service Pack 1 then it successfully installed. If it doesn't say SP1 then you can try the installation again.

    Hi Evan
Yes, I did restart my PC. I've checked the computer properties and it is NOT listed.
So, I tried re running the patch which ran for about 1 minute (without messages appearing). The hard drive showed activity for that time and then went quiet. After 5 mins I rebooted again, checked properties, and still no change.
Is it possible that I have installed all the relevant updates? I do install most of what they send me as they become available.
I see a mention of SP2 beta on the microsoft site; should I install that?
Sorry to be such a dummy.

Ian, you are not a dummy. So does the installation of SP1 just stop? Any error message appear? Something is proabably interrupting the installation process. Did you try installing the system update readiness tool in the Microsoft KB article I linked you to?

    Hi Evan
    Sorry, hit the wrong button!!
    What Ive done is:
1 downloaded the patch to a folder
    2 closed all other applications
3 right clicked the folder and 'run as administartor
4 I get to confirm I'm the administrator
5 then the Vista 'busy' ring displays for approx 3 minutes while the hard drive disc led flickers
6 then everything just sits there doing nothing! Including me!
    no messages at all!

I haven't done the system update readiness tool though. I'll do that now and try again.

    Well Evan
I've tried to install the systems readiness thingy but it went through all the motions and ended with the message 'some updates not installed'.....that was IT! so I tried again with the SP1 installation...all to no avail. Any further suggestions?
